A big hurdle for take-up of electric cars has been the lack of charging points available. At present, only London, Milton Keynes and areas in the northeast of England have charging points.
£20m has also been allocated to councils within The Midlands, Greater Manchester, East of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland to install 4000 more charging points. That's in addition to the 11,000 EV posts being installed in London, Milton Keynes and North East England by 2013.

Below are the nine cars that receive the £5000 plug-in grant, each one emitting less than 75g/km of CO2. From 1 January 2011, they all qualify for £5000 off the list price but you will have to wait for a number of them.

Benefits to ‘buying electric’ include the £5,000 plug-in grant, which effectively is a cash discount when you purchase from the dealer, allied to totally free road tax and full exemption from the London Congestion Charge. Company Car buyers can also take advantage of a tasty little loophole – these cars are exempt from Company Car Tax for five years. Compared to a diesel Ford Focus it's a saving of around £500 per year for a basic rate tax payer.
