Electric cars are exempt from company car tax until April 2015. Its now possible to own a practical family sized electric car like the Nissan Leaf and Vauxhall Ampera and pay no company car tax.

Company car tax legislation changes in 2012 with only cars with emissions of 99 Co2 g/km or less now being placed in the lowest band of company car tax. As the UK government continues its quest to drive us into greener cars via road tax, 2012 also sees a major step change in company car tax bands which means any driver choosing a company car with emissions between 120g/km and 225g/km next year, will see an increase in their annual costs.

At present any new car in Bands A to C (sub 120 g/km) has been in the lowest band for company car tax i.e. 10% for petrol and 13% for diesel. However from April 2012 only cars with CO2 emissions up to 99g/km will be taxed at these lowest levels. All other cars will be taxed at a higher level up to a maximum of 35 per cent.
