Congestion Charge Exempt Cars 2012

London Congestion Charge legislation changed from 4th January 2011. Introduction of the Greener Vehicle Discount (GVD meant that any car that emits less that 100 g/km of CO2 and that meets the Euro 5 standard for air quality will be exempt from congestion charge if registered with TfL, so is FREE to drive in Central London. That equates to a £2900 per annum saving if you drive into London every day for work between the hours of 7am and 6pm, plus all these cars are in road tax band A so road tax is totally free as well. For a full list of new Band A cars click here: Road Tax Band A.

4th January also saw the daily charge increase from £8 to £10 for those that pay on the day. In addition there's the introduction of 'Congestion Charging Auto Pay' where a £1 discount is available to those who register for automated Credit / Debit card payment.

Under the old regulations (pre 4th January 2011) only hybrid or electric cars receive exemption from the £8 daily charge, but ongoing all low emission Euro 5 standard petrol or diesel cars that emit less than 100 g/km will be free to drive in London. Below you will find all Free London Congestion Charge cars under the 2011 changes. Amazingly they include the small family sized Audi A3, Seat Leon and Volkswagen Golf, as well as the models below - click the links (in blue) for more details.

Electric Cars

We’ve all sniggered at the G-Wizz, but serious mass produced electric cars from the major manufacturers are now being launched across 2012 and are totally free to drive in Central London. What’s more they come with a Government funded £5000 Electric Car Grant. The Mitsubishi i-MiEV was the first and has now been followed by the Nissan Leaf small family car that will cover 100 miles on a single charge and costs £24,000.

How To Qualify For Congestion Charge Exemption

To qualify for exemption from the London Congestion Charge, the car will need to be one of those listed above i.e. emit less than 100 g/km and be a Euro V standard car. You can purchase any of these vehicles in 2010 and register for the full discount from 4th January 2011. Any car first registered with the DVLA as new on or after 1 January 2011 will be considered to meet the Euro 5 standard. TfL charge a yearly £10 registration fee. Details of the application process and forms can be found on the TfL website.
