Road Tax Emissions: Best Cars for CO2 Emissions are the best cars for low tax

The introduction of Showroom Tax means it’s imperative that you do your homework and select the right version of your chosen car. By choosing the right low CO2 model and trim specification you can save hundreds in on-going Road Tax and fuel costs. Below we highlight the lowest emission cars in 4 key car markets, Supermini, Small Family, Small MPV & Crossover.

Low Emission Cars

If you are in the market for a new car fact is you need to get an understanding of CO2 emissions and low emission cars. The movement towards driving low emission cars constantly gains momentum and has taken a step further forward in the UK with the introduction of Showroom Tax. Like it or not the UK government is determined to hit CO2 emission targets and is using road tax to drive the consumer towards lower emission cars.

Designed to encourage buyers to choose cars with lower carbon dioxide emissions the aim of Showroom Tax is to penalise high-emission vehicles with a higher first-year rate of Road Tax. The Department of Transport describes this as “First-year rates provide a stronger signal at the point of purchase that motorists can save money by choosing a lower-carbon car.” It’s believed that Showroom Tax will raise £735 million in its first year of inception.

Buyers know that a greener car is cheaper to run and superminis have never been so popular. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) says that supermini sales now account for over 30% of all cars sold. Allied to that the average CO2 emissions of new cars sold in the UK have collapsed over the past decade. In 1997 the average car sold in the UK had CO2 emissions of 189g/km. In 2008 that average had fallen to 158g/km (source: SMMT)
